About the Project
Other Joys is an ongoing photographic series by Alice Poyzer that explores happiness as an intense, embodied and non normative experience. Using black and white photography, flash and carefully staged situations, Poyzer builds a visual world shaped by her special interests, not as a clinical category to be explained, but as a force to be embraced and performed.
What is often misunderstood, minimised or politely tolerated becomes here a source of pleasure and insistence. Repetition is a strategy, and obsessions are not hidden but made visible, forming a language of images that is playful and unexpectedly seductive. Animal shows and taxidermy play a central role in this series, recalling rituals of competition and display. The resulting images move between care and spectacle, affection and separation.
Other Joys does not aim to explain autism or translate it into a reassuring narrative. Instead, it reveals the effort, adjustments and quiet tensions required to appear acceptable, while proposing joy as something relational and sometimes excessive.
