About the Project
The series operates at the intersection of American fantasy and an unsettling reality. Named after the college town where the artist was raised – a polarized landscape where naivete collides with wealth and the facade of middle-class Americana was fractured by a sex scandal – the project is both an autobiography of a place and a critique of the psychological spaces women are forced to inhabit. The name is a geographical coincidence and an ironic anchor, questioning the image of happiness we are conditioned to perform.
O’Leary adopts the seductive visual language of advertising to document a world constructed rather than lived, investigating the manipulative rhetoric of commercial imagery. Exposing narratives imposed on women, the artist explores the tension between the desire to be seen and the danger of being consumed. The resulting images are both imitation and resistance to the commercial gaze, stripping away the polish of American misogyny to reveal the anxiety beneath the surface.
